Asterix in Switzerland Book Review

I chose this graphic novel for three reasons. The first and main reason I chose this graphic novel is because of the story’s background and how it relates to me and my French heritage, because the main setting of the series is in Gaul, which is also the part of France today that my grandmother is from. The second reason is because of the story’s  interesting characters along with their astonishing personalities. The third reason why I chose this graphic novel is because I find it to be one of the funniest journeys out of the series that the two main characters Asterix and Obelix experienced.

The Asterix series is about the adventures of two Gauls, Asterix and Obelix, who live in a small Gaulish village rebelling against the roman empire, in the year 50 B.C. In Asterix in Switzerland, Asterix and Obelix are called upon to fetch an essential ingredient for a magical potion to heal the very ill (because he was poisoned) Quaestor Vexatius Sinusitus. Asterix and Obelix are sent on a mission to find the silver star (edelweiss) which can only be found on the highest mountains in Helvetia, Switzerland. During their quest, they come across some interesting characters: roman legionaries; a man who got thrown into a river with weights tied to his feet after dropping his piece of bread into the cheese fondue three times; a short innkeeper that demonstrates how Switzerland’s famous cuckoo hourglasses function, and a group of friendly mountain-climbing yodelers that help them find the silver star.

One of the characters that I really enjoy in the Asterix series is Obelix, Asterix’s best friend. Obelix has a hilarious past which has affected the way he is in the Asterix series. When Obelix was a baby he accidentally fell into a cauldron that was filled with magic potion giving the Gauls strength and speed. As a result Obelix is always super strong. Obelix is also very funny and tends to have a large appetite, for he enjoys hunting and eating tons of wild boar everyday! If I could meet Obelix I would want to hear all of his experiences traveling around the world, meeting different people, and what it is like fighting the roman legionaries surrounding their village, plus he seems to have a great sense of humor.

I enjoy reading and re-reading the Asterix graphic novels. They are adventurous, funny, detailed, and it keeps the reader interested. Those are the things I cherish in all the books that I favor. I would recommend this book in a heart beat if someone asked me what graphic novel would you suggest I read? I actually have already told several people about the Asterix series and brought a few of them to school and all the people I shared this book with, liked it as well.

There aren’t many other books that are quite like the Asterix series, that capture the feeling of the friendship between Asterix and Obelix and what they have experienced together, but there is a movie that I have seen that capture a small village fighting/rebelling their conquerers. That movie is Braveheart. Braveheart is about the Scottish not liking the way the English are running things, like sleeping with the recently wedded  wives of Scotland, so they rose up above the English and went to battle. Another movie that can relate to the Asterix series is Gladiator. Gladiator relates to the Gauls fighting the romans, in Gladiator a man named Maximus was a Roman general who was betrayed and seeks revenge as a gladiator in the same time period. At the end of the day they are kind of like the Three Stooges because they always seem to get into these crazy situations that might seem a little ridiculous, and I can’t help laughing at how they always pull though.

Written in the Stars Poem (Parody)

by Tristan & Luke

Written in the stars

Not that far away

Why is my plane so delayed

Minutes never end

They will never change

I’m really here to stay

Come on lets go

I’m just sitting here

They said it won’t take a while

That they will take off not long from now

Cause they got to fix the engine I’m like really, wow

Why can’t they hurry up brrrrraps, brrrrraps

Man I’m in first class fully white despite

I ask questions over the complicated plane flight

Now I’m yellin at them with enthusiastic verbal attacks

Look at the time and the map

I feel like here is a death trap

I can hear the loudness of my heart beat

“Miss can I please get out of my seat.”

She replied, “Hold on I’ll be right back.”

Consumed by time, why aren’t we on track

People worked hard just to get here

Now they’re waiting, waiting like a sitting duck

Who the hells got any sanity left

It feels like we are the people no one cares about

That’s why you have to keep screaming ’til they hear you out

Songs are poems, too!

Written in the Stars

by Tristan, Elon, and Luke

1) The first thing that I noticed when I looked at the lyrics was that there was a huge amount of personal pronouns.  Almost all the lines in the verses started with either the word I or they.  Later on in the line I noticed the words me and they were used a lot.  Tinie Tempah (the writer and singer of this song) also used a few cases of slang like ‘cause instead of because, however, this is not the same as most songs in the genre. I also noticed that the word like was used a lot, this shows signs of a lot of similes, and that also makes the the song so much more realistic.

2)  I thought that the song was about an inspirational way of talking about a child with no help.  The story is really about this kid who has no help from his parents.  He is adopted and the woman in the video is taking care of him (or at least it seems like) is a prostitute, and that’s why the kid has to do his homework in the hall by himself with no one to help him or to encourage him in any way.  We know he is adopted because of this quote “Adopted by the major I want my family back.”  Also it seems like the kid has to look after himself and do illegal stuff like steal food, money, ect… to most people, it’s just really messed up.  However, he is kind of forced to do this because he is so hungry.  We know he is hungry from this quote; “But have you ever been so hungry it keeps you awake

Mate, now my hunger would leave them amazed.”  In the end, I feel really bad for this kid who is being abused by his parents in multiple ways.  He doesn’t even get enough food even though it seems that his mom is making a lot of money.
